2014-15 season was tough for E-Café because the international coffee market price was lower than the local parchment price within Mexico. As a result, we could not additional incentives and rewards to E-Café member producers who gave us quality coffee.
Even though it wasn’t much, we wanted to give some presents to our producers in appreciation for their work. A few times over the past when we were visiting the producers, the producers in remote locations have asked for some food that they could not buy from their villages. So we decided to give them the things that people frequently use: sugar, corn flour, vegetable oil, fish can, chips, jalapeno, beans and other staples that everyone needs.
We could have simply given them money or taken an easier way but, instead, we wanted our own staff members to prepare the staples packages with grateful hearts.
Producers who received an expected gift greeted Sergio with heartwarming smiles and even though it may not be a big help but we saw that our relationships with the producers are developing not just as a buyer and a producer business relationship but a friendship.
