Did you know about the School Project in Finca Las Chicharras?

The School Project began in early 2017 as a result of a visit that Rehm & Co (Benecke Coffee) made to our farm Finca Las Chicharras. With their donations we were able to build a classroom and school material for children.

Most of the coffee pickers working in our farms come from Guatemala to Mexico to work during the harvest season. Although the season matches the winter school break in Guatemala, we prefer if farmers’ children spend their time in the farm learning and being kids rather than following their parents while their work. We might not be able to provide education for them all year long, as the majority of these pickers live in our farms seasonally, but we believe that every day can make a difference in children’s’ lives.  Through the School Project, we provide basic education to children in our farm.

Last year, when a new green house was installed in Finca Las Chicharras, we also decided to build new and better dormitories for our farmers. Along with it, a new classroom was build four our children where a teacher looks after them while their parents work. Additionally, thanks to Benecke’s continuous support during the 2019 and 2020, we have also purchase a slide, and swing sets for a new ground near the new dormitories.

New dormitories for farmers and pickers in Finca Las Chicharras

This year was challenging, but it also had its good news. One of them is that thanks to Rehm & Co we have been able to give continuity to this project. The second one is that The Bean Yard Coffee has also been supporting to our projects and finally since last month, the SCHOOL PROJECT kicked off in our farm Finca Las Cascadas as well!!

Finca Las Cascadas has now a teacher in home who takes care of not only children but our babies in the farms since early morning when all coffee pickers go out to work. In this way, our pickers who bring their babies to the farm, can work knowing that their kids are being well taken care of. Las Cascadas’ teacher, Gloria, has also an afternoon class for our teenagers. There has been a great response from all farmers working in our farm.

During the 2021, too we hope to meet more people who share our vision!
