We know that these are hard times for everyone, but we also know that everyone is doing their best to put up with the situation and we cannot give up. E-cafe Chiapas is adapting to push the coffee market forward along with everyone in the supply chain by exporting smaller volumes of coffee and continue working with small-scale producers.

The spread of the COVID-19 virus is having a visible impact on the economic activities worldwide. Inevitably, with the temporary lock-downs and the expected drop of consumption in general, (as estimated by the OECD on its publication “Evaluating the initial impact of the Covid-19 containment measures on Economic Activity”), the coffee industry is also already experiencing the effects of the contingency. As producers and exporters, we have seen a significant drop in sales, contracts being called off, and micro-lot producers uncertain about profiting from this year´s harvest. We have heard the same concerned repeatedly from other friends in the industry.

From the coffee producers’ perspective, the greatest concern is not being able to sell this year´s production while the operating and production costs continue to increase. The situation is especially troubling for small-scale producers who are highly dependent on each harvest’s profits to prepare for the following, and who are generally the ones at end side of the repercussions to the supply chain of coffee. That is why, we have compromised to our partners from El Mezcal Micro-lot to purchase their coffee hoping to lessen the impact of the pandemic on their finances.

Similarly, importers, also assume higher risks by importing large volumes of coffee that might not be able to sell. Of course, an increasing inventory and low sales are never a good combination when it comes to a live product as coffee. Moreover, importing consolidated coffees for different clients without losing the logistic advantages becomes harder as the pandemic does not allow those clients to get many bags (and increase the chances of back outs).

For roasters likewise, it is important to stay afloat, continue roasting and adapting to the current market conditions. Many roasters are now focusing on online sales, for example. However, for them, roasting takes place slower and in smaller batches than usual, and while using their beans in stock, we do not want to rule out purchasing fresh beans.

We are working with FedEx to deliver fresh coffee beans from our farms to your door. The logistic process is simple. After choosing the coffee that you want to purchase, we prepare a pallet with your bags of coffee and send it to you by air freight. You will receive your coffee a few days later and you only need to fill a form with your company’s information. We can send 2 bags, 7 bags ideally, or a ton. And there are discounted shipping costs for the United States and Canada!

We did the first delivery of 7 bags of coffee from our farm ‘Las Cascadas’ to Salt Lake City, Utah early this year, 100% door-to-door, Direct Trade specialty coffee. Currently, we have coffee available from both of our farms, Finca Las Cascadas and Finca Las Chicharras, as well as El Mezcal Micro-lot.

We hope that together we can deliver fresh coffee to consumers wherever they are. Let’s accept it, a nice cup of coffee can make anyone’s say better, especially in quarantine.
